I think they illustrate why the diaries are VERY hard to transcribe, especially for a modern reader such as me, who is used to reading printed text, even of my own work.

Ellen's Diary, 19th of February, 1839

  “…I must mention the reason that my handwriting has been so bad lately. My eyes have been so bad lately that I must fear I cannot continue too much longer…”
