The Hall Diaries

"I should share with pleasure any and every privation there - so that I could enjoy the delights of their united society."

Family was a hugely important part of Emily and Ellen's world.  They were the two youngest daughter's of a typically large family, and in the period of writing on which I am focusing, they lived at home with their parents and their elder sister Louisa, who was yet to be married.  However, their three elder brother's -  Melmouth, Sydney and Charles - had all left the family home to make their way in the world.

Ellen and Emily's Parents were Charles and Augusta Hall

Their eldest surviving son was Melmouth who married Charlotte in 1838.

Charles Jr went to work in Australia at the start of 1839

Sydney went into business with James Sherrard who later married Ellen and Emily's elder sister, Louisa
