In his reading of the diary, Sherrard discovered that this entailed attending lectures about educational matter such as the following:

"On the Laws and Functions of Animal Life”

“On Astronomy”

“On Druidism”

“On the different kinds of men this world of ours contains”

In his reading of the diary, Sherrard discovered that:

“Ellen enjoyed them. Some she found “very interesting”, but of others she could be scathing: “Soon after half past 7 Mr. Kaye pulling on his white gloves commenced his lecture upon education – stupid and dull and prosy it was indeed”.  But whether interesting or dull, the lectures were social events, not lightly to be missed; the whole community went to them and with popular lecturers seats were difficult to secure.”
