| "Another lovely day destined to be spent in visiting - Oh, the plagues of civilised society!" - Emily Hall Extracts from the Diaries of Emily and Ellen Hall 1839 - 1843 Pictures from Bromley Library This website contains extracts from the diaries of Emily and Ellen Hall. These two women recorded over sixty years of their lives in journals that stretch from the late 1830's to 1901. I have presented a small number of the extracts that I have transcribed while reading the volumes that the two sisters wrote while they were in their late teens and early twenties. They give a fascinating insight into what it was like to be a young women in the early Victorian era. While strict social conventions meant that it was not acceptable for middle-class women to work, they certainly found plenty of activities to fill their time. You can read about their hobbies, their outings in philanthropy, their love for literature and, of course, their diary writing. Maybe even more revealing are the entries about their family and friends and the insights they give us into their feelings about love, life and relationships.
The site is still under construction as what I am presenting is part of an ongoing research project. I will add more extracts and topics as I come across them. I hope you will find something of interest to enjoy reading! mail to:hall.diaries@btinternet.co.uk
